Background Remover

Remove backgrounds from images online for free. Clear solid-colour backgrounds or try AI portrait cutouts, then download a transparent PNG. Your images stay on your device.

Static JPG, PNG or WebP · up to 20 MB and 8 megapixels.

Click the original preview to pick a colour. Only matching pixels connected to an image edge are removed.

Create a transparent image background

Choose the method that fits your image. Solid-colour removal works on edge-connected backgrounds in logos and graphics. The optional AI portrait method is designed for people and is offered as a beta.

  1. Choose a static JPG, PNG or WebP image.
  2. For a plain background, pick its colour in the preview and adjust tolerance. For a person, try AI portrait mode.
  3. Check the result against the checkerboard and download the transparent PNG.

What to expect

Solid-colour mode preserves enclosed regions even if they have the same colour as the background. Higher tolerance can remove parts of a subject connected to the edge. Portrait results vary, especially around hair, glass, shadows and overlapping objects. No manual brush refinement is included. Choose a transparent result or replace the removed background with a solid colour. Colour replacement uses the same removal mask; it does not improve the cutout edges.

Does this work on any background?

No. Solid-colour mode is intended for simple backgrounds. AI portrait mode is trained for people and is not a general product or animal cutout tool.

Are my photos uploaded?

The plugin processes image pixels locally. Optional AI mode downloads code and model files from jsDelivr and Hugging Face, which receive ordinary download requests but not your selected image.

Why download PNG?

PNG supports transparent pixels. JPG cannot store transparency and will show a filled background when converted.

Why does AI take longer the first time?

The browser needs to download and prepare the portrait model. A slow connection, limited memory or restrictive site settings can prevent it from loading. Use solid-colour mode for a suitable image instead.

HOW IT WORKS

How background removal works

Two methods, one transparent result. Understand colour removal, portrait masks and the PNG you download.

Solid-colour removal: edge-connected flood fill

Starting at the image borders, the tool visits neighbouring pixels and compares their RGB colour with the chosen background colour. Pixels within the tolerance are made transparent by setting alpha to zero. Only connected regions are reached; an enclosed white area inside a logo can remain. Higher tolerance accepts a wider colour difference and can also remove subject pixels connected to an edge.

Portrait mode: a predicted alpha mask

Optional portrait mode uses the MODNet model through Transformers.js and WebAssembly on your device. The model estimates a foreground mask for a person. Its mask is resized to the source dimensions and multiplied into the existing alpha channel. Soft mask values allow partially transparent hair edges. This is a prediction and may fail on difficult hair, glass, shadows or non-portrait subjects.

Why the result is PNG

Alpha is a per-pixel opacity value: zero is transparent and full opacity is solid. PNG can store that channel; JPG cannot. The result is encoded as PNG. Solid-colour mode needs no model download. Portrait mode downloads model and runtime files from external providers on first use, but the image itself is processed locally.
