Resize images to the dimensions you need

Enter a custom width and height in pixels, or leave one blank to calculate it from each image’s proportions. Process JPG, PNG and WebP files together without uploading them.

  1. Choose your photos, then select custom dimensions or a social size preset. Presets use Fit with padding for exact output dimensions; change the fitting option if you prefer cropping.
  2. Choose how to handle different proportions: fit inside, centre-crop, stretch or pad.
  3. Resize, compare the output dimensions and download individual images or a ZIP.

What to expect

Fit inside preserves proportions and may produce a smaller size than the requested box. Crop, stretch and padding produce exact dimensions when both values are supplied. Canvas mode centres the original image without scaling. JPG padding is white unless black is selected. Enlarging an image does not restore missing detail.

Can I resize to an exact width and height?

Yes. Enter both values and choose centre-crop, stretch or padding. Fit inside preserves proportions and stays within your requested box.

What happens if I leave a dimension blank?

With custom resizing, it is calculated automatically to preserve the original proportions. In canvas mode, a blank dimension keeps the original size.

Can I add transparent padding?

Yes, with PNG or WebP output. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent padding becomes white.

Can I enlarge an image?

Custom resizing allows enlargement, which can look softer. Maximum long edge mode only reduces larger images. Outputs are limited to 40 megapixels and 16,384 pixels per side.

HOW IT WORKS

How image resizing works

From custom dimensions to cropping and padding, see how the tool creates the right fit for your image.

How dimensions are calculated

A decoded image is drawn onto a new canvas. With one dimension blank, the other is calculated from the original aspect ratio. Fit inside uses the smaller of the width and height scale factors; centre crop uses the larger and clips the excess. Stretch uses separate horizontal and vertical scales. Padding keeps the subject proportional and fills the remaining canvas area.

Resampling versus canvas size

Resizing resamples pixels through the browser’s canvas drawing implementation with smoothing enabled. Reducing dimensions removes spatial detail. Enlarging interpolates pixels and cannot recover missing photographic detail. Change canvas size keeps the image at its original pixel size and adds space or clips edges around it. Maximum-long-edge mode only reduces dimensions, while custom dimensions can enlarge.

What does encoding mean?

Decoding turns the bytes in an image file into pixels that a browser can display. Encoding turns pixels back into a file, using the rules of JPG, PNG or WebP. It is not encryption. Our compression and conversion tools decode locally, draw the image onto a canvas and call the browser’s canvas.toBlob encoder. The browser supplies the codec, so results can vary between browsers.

Why size and quality are different

Pixel dimensions describe the image grid; file size measures encoded bytes. A 600 × 600 image has 360,000 pixels, but its byte size depends on format, visual complexity and quality. PNG preserves transparency; JPG requires an opaque background.

Where processing happens

Your selected image is processed on your device, without an image upload. Canvas exports are new files and may change embedded metadata or colour information. Keep a master copy for archival work. Animated PNG and animated WebP are rejected; these tools handle static images.

How target-size compression works

Choose 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or a custom decimal-KB limit. For JPG/WebP, the tool tries quality values from your selected maximum down to 10% and refines a successful bracket with a bounded binary search. When you explicitly allow smaller dimensions, it can also try up to eight downsizing steps. PNG ignores quality. Exact resizer dimensions are preserved. Only a measured output within the byte limit is marked Target met; otherwise the smallest tested candidate is marked Above target. This is a bounded search, not proof of a globally optimal result.

Metadata choice

Preserve supported metadata is the default: EXIF dates, camera and GPS fields are copied, with orientation reset after decoding and dimensions updated. PNG text/dates and JPG comments stay within their format. XMP, IPTC and original colour profiles are not transferred; embedded preview links are cleared. Retained metadata is included in target-size measurements. Remove metadata omits source metadata and disables the original-file fallback. Filesystem download dates are separate.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few small details.

Better images start with the right settings.

Which format should I choose?

WebP is a useful starting point for website photos and transparent graphics. JPG suits photos when you need a JPEG file; transparent areas become white. PNG uses lossless encoding and keeps transparency, but often creates larger files.

Will compression change image quality?

JPG and WebP use lossy compression: lower quality usually means smaller files and more visible changes. Use Compare to inspect your result. PNG encoding is lossless, but resizing still changes pixels. PNG conversion can increase file size. This tool uses your browser’s image encoders, so results can differ between browsers.

Why is my image already small?

If the output uses the same format and dimensions but is larger than the original, we keep your original file. Changing formats or dimensions can still create a larger result; the actual size is always shown. The quality slider doesn’t affect PNG encoding.

Are there file limits?

Add up to 100 static images, 50 MB per image and 200 MB of original files per batch. Each image must be within 40 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on either side. Animated PNG and WebP are rejected to protect their animation. GIF, SVG, HEIC and AVIF aren’t supported in this version. Large batches depend on your device’s memory.

Are my images uploaded or saved?

This tool processes selected images locally in this browser tab and doesn’t send image files to a server. Your site’s hosting, analytics or other plugins may separately collect normal website visit data. Download results you want to keep before clearing the list or leaving. Re-encoding generally removes file metadata; an original file kept because it was smaller retains its existing metadata. This isn’t a metadata sanitization tool.
