What to expect
JPG is useful for photos, attachments and apps that cannot open AVIF. It uses lossy encoding, so inspect fine detail. Transparent areas are replaced with your selected colour. A JPG may be larger than the original AVIF.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF stores image data using AV1 compression inside an image container. It can be efficient, but some apps and upload forms accept only JPG or PNG.
Does conversion reduce quality?
JPG uses lossy compression. A high quality setting can reduce visible changes but cannot recover detail already lost in the AVIF. This tool exports 8-bit colour and does not preserve HDR or original colour profiles.
Will the JPG keep transparency?
No. JPG has no alpha channel. Choose a background colour before converting, or use AVIF to PNG to preserve existing transparency.
Are dimensions and metadata kept?
Pixel dimensions are retained. Source metadata, HDR and wide-gamut profiles are not copied. Keep the original if those matter.
How avif to jpg works
JPG is useful for photos, attachments and apps that cannot open AVIF. It uses lossy encoding, so inspect fine detail. Transparent areas are replaced with your selected colour. A JPG may be larger than the original AVIF.
Read the AVIF container
The tool checks the AVIF container, declared dimensions and static-image brand before decoding. Animated AVIF is rejected. A bundled libavif WebAssembly decoder runs in a worker, producing 8-bit pixels locally.
Draw the decoded pixels
The decoded pixels are drawn to a canvas at their original dimensions. PNG keeps alpha transparency. For JPG the chosen background is painted behind the image because JPEG has no alpha channel.
Encode a new file
The browser canvas encoder creates JPG or PNG bytes. JPG applies the selected quality setting. PNG losslessly encodes the canvas pixels. Neither format conversion restores detail lost earlier.
Know what is not preserved
This pipeline does not copy source metadata, HDR or wide-gamut profiles. The converted file can be larger and colours can differ. Keep the original for archival and colour-critical use.
