GIF Compressor
Compress GIF files in your browser while keeping the animation. Reduce dimensions, colours or frame count, compare the result and download. No image uploads.
One GIF · up to 20 MB, 4 megapixels, 300 frames and 2 minutes. A 120-million total frame-pixel limit protects device memory.
Aspect ratio stays locked.
Skipping frames reduces smoothness while keeping the overall duration. Smaller dimensions and fewer colours may lose detail. Original loop behaviour is retained.

Files stay on your device. Transparency and frame disposal are handled during animation reconstruction. Very short frame delays are normalised to 100 ms for playback compatibility. Re-encoding removes comments and non-animation extensions; it is not metadata-preserving. A smaller result is not guaranteed. Preview before downloading and keep your original.
Compress animated GIFs online
Make a GIF smaller by adjusting its dimensions, palette and frames. Preview the original and processed animation before downloading.
- Choose an animated GIF from your device.
- Reduce its width, colours or frame count, then compress.
- Compare the animation and file sizes, then download your result.
What to expect
Smaller dimensions usually make the biggest difference. Fewer colours can introduce banding; skipping frames reduces smoothness. File size savings vary and an already optimised GIF may get larger. Your original remains available.
Does the GIF stay animated?
Yes. The tool reconstructs the animation and exports GIF frames. If you skip frames, the remaining frames receive the combined delay so the overall duration is retained.
Are GIF files uploaded?
No. Decoding, palette reduction and encoding run in a local browser worker.
Can I compress a GIF without losing quality?
Resizing, reducing colours and skipping frames can change the appearance. This tool does not promise lossless compression or a smaller result.
Does it keep transparency and looping?
Transparency and disposal rules are handled while reconstructing frames, and the original loop setting is retained. Preview your output before using it.
What are the limits?
Choose a GIF up to 20 MB, 4 megapixels per frame, 4096 pixels per edge, 300 frames and two minutes. Width × height × frame count must not exceed 120 million. Very short frame delays are normalised to 100 ms.
Does it preserve metadata?
Re-encoding retains animation timing and looping but drops comments and other non-animation extensions. Keep the original if those matter.
How GIF compression works
The browser decodes the animation, reconstructs each visible frame, reduces the image data and writes a new GIF.
Reconstruct frames
The local GIF decoder reads frame rectangles, palettes, transparency, delays and disposal methods. Frames are composed in sequence, including restore-to-previous and clear-to-background behaviour.
Resize and select frames
Frames are resized with nearest-neighbour sampling. When skipping frames, their delays are added to the retained frames to preserve duration. Sub-20 ms source delays are normalised to 100 ms for common browser playback behaviour.
Reduce colours
A local colour quantizer builds a smaller palette for each frame. Pixel colours are mapped to palette indexes, with one entry reserved for transparency. There is no dithering, so smooth gradients may show banding.
Encode a new animation
The encoder writes complete frames with GIF LZW compression and retains the original loop count. Comments and non-animation extensions are not copied. The result can be larger than an already optimised source, particularly one using small partial-frame updates.
