Extract GIF Frames

Extract GIF frames as PNG images online. Preview each full-canvas frame, download one PNG or all frames in a ZIP. Local browser processing with no uploads.

Step by step

Choose a GIF and click Extract frames. The tool reconstructs each frame and displays numbered PNG previews. Use the individual Download PNG link for a single frame, or Download all frames for a ZIP in sequence order.

What is a GIF frame?

An animation is a sequence of pictures and delays. A GIF may store only the rectangle that changes from one frame to the next. A raw rectangle is not always the complete visible picture, so this extractor applies disposal rules and combines the necessary pixels before exporting each PNG.

Save one frame as PNG

Find the numbered preview you want and download it. The exported PNG has the GIF canvas dimensions. It keeps the reconstructed pixels and transparency rather than applying another GIF colour-quantization step.

Download every frame in order

The ZIP uses names such as frame-001.png and frame-002.png so alphabetical order matches the animation. Each preview shows the recorded delay in milliseconds. PNG files themselves are still images and do not retain animation timing.

Why the ZIP can be larger than the GIF

A GIF can reuse unchanged regions and palette entries. Each extracted PNG is a separate full-canvas image. The ZIP is a convenient package, not a promise of compression savings. Large animations can therefore hit the output limit even if the original GIF was small.

Transparency and disposal

The extractor reconstructs frame changes, including restore-to-background and restore-to-previous instructions. Check the previews before using unusual GIFs because GIF viewers can differ in background and zero-delay handling. Transparent areas show a checkerboard in previews; the checkerboard is not part of the PNG.

Limits and privacy

Choose one GIF up to 20 MB, 4 megapixels per frame, 4096 pixels per edge, 300 frames and 60 million total frame pixels. The total extracted PNG data is limited to 80 MB. All reconstruction and ZIP packaging happen locally. Clear or close the tab after downloading; the source file is not changed.

HOW IT WORKS

Behind the result

GIF frames can store only changed areas. The extractor reconstructs complete displayed frames so downloads include the required content from earlier frames.

Decode GIF image data

The decoder reads the canvas, palettes, frame rectangles and graphic-control data. LZW decoding recovers indexed pixels for each stored frame.

Reconstruct displayed frames

Frames are composited in order. Disposal instructions determine whether the previous area is retained, cleared or restored from an earlier canvas snapshot.

Encode full PNG images

Each reconstructed canvas is encoded as PNG in a worker. Numbered filenames keep the source order; the UI reports each recorded frame delay separately.

Package the downloads

PNG blobs are offered individually and collected into a local ZIP. Total output limits protect memory. GIF comments and animation timing are not embedded in the individual PNG files.
