One still image is converted per file. Source metadata, Live Photo video and HDR are not preserved. Keep your original photos. JPG is widely compatible and usually smaller than PNG.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. HEIC decoding and image encoding happen in your browser.

Does this keep the photo date?

The exported file is newly created and does not preserve source EXIF dates or other metadata. Keep the original HEIC.

Is HEIC to JPEG the same as HEIC to JPG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format.

HOW IT WORKS

How HEIC to JPG conversion works

The local HEIC decoder produces pixels, then your browser encodes a new JPG image.

Decode the container

A bundled libheif WebAssembly decoder runs in a separate worker on your device. A fresh worker processes each file and is released afterwards. No source image is sent to a server.

Choose the still image

The decoder selects the primary image when available, otherwise the first decoded image. Auxiliary depth maps and Live Photo video are not exported.

Encode and package

Decoded pixels are drawn onto a canvas. The browser encodes JPG and successful files can be packaged into a local ZIP. JPG quality controls lossy encoding. Transparent pixels are placed on white.
